Day 1 - Welcome and Induction

The first week introduces the expectations we have for CodeYourFuture Trainees, the technical and employability skills they will develop and the support available during the course.

Prior Knowledge

All trainees should have completed the Fundamentals Module.

Celebration!!!

Make an effort to mark the achievements of the trainees up to this point. They completed ITC and Fundamentals. Some never wrote a line of code before that!

Session 1

Find Your Voice (40 mins - 60 mins)

  • To facilitate confidence building through drama activities

  • To allow all trainees the opportunity to speak (find their voice) at least once during the session

  • To allow space for trainees to bond, integrate and feel part of a group

Session 2

Goals and Expectations (20 - 25 mins)

  • To identify trainees goal(s) for being on the Full Stack CYF course

  • To highlight the expectations CodeYourFuture has for it's trainees

  • To Introduce the concept of progressing from students on the Intro to Coding and Fundamentals courses to being Trainees on the Full stack Course

Go through the course calendar and highlight what happens and when.

Additional Support Roles (10 mins)

  • Introduce the roles of the PD and Ed teams

  • Introduce the roles of the PD and Ed Buddies (tell them they will meet their buddies next week)

  • Employability and Tech Study groups (mid week)

Session 4

What do Developers do? (20 mins)

In this section we'll explore how a professional behaves and thus how we expect trainees to behave, underscoring the name change to trainee developer

Exercise

  1. Brainstorm together in small or large groups imagine all the day-to-day activities and behaviours of a professional software developer

    • You might want to use a Miro Board

  2. Once we have we have a large list, invite them to think about whether they do all those things already

  3. Discuss how to change things so they begin to do more and more of those things highlighting that practice is the way to develop

Session 5

Teambuilding (35 minutes)

  • To allow team members dip their toes into the bonding experience without feeling awkward or insecure

  • To allow team members to step out of their comfort zone, open up a bit more and be vulnerable

  • To help participants build their decision making skills to learn about thinking out of the box

Session 6

Growth Mindset (45 mins - 1 hour)

  • Introduction to Growth Mindset

  • Learning Journal

Session 7

Introduction to Honeycomb - CodeYourFuture Habits (45 minutes - 1 hour)

  • How to give and receive feedback (20 mins)

  • Intro to the habits

  • How to use the Honeycomb environment (demo the Honeycomb Platform)

Session 8

Independent Practice- Coursework introduction

There are 2 separate Google Classrooms. 1 for technical coursework and another for PD coursework. There will be PD assignments every week so please check both Google Classrooms. See the coursework here.
